black screen after auto restart update - computer unusable

Can someone help me.
The Win 8 that has given me grief from the start has finally killed my computer i think.
It did one of those auto restarts that one can not stop without a advanced degree in computer science, and after the auto shut down the computer
has lights on but nothing but black screen.
I have tried to shut off with holding down the off key, it goes off and then when i turn it on i get lights again but again black screen (hitting f8 during this process does nothing to help) .
What happened?
