Cannot open an excel document

Remember - This is a public forum so never post private information such as email or phone numbers!
Excel document.
I have sent an excel document back to its original sender after adding some information.
 It is saved on my mac as an Excel document 97-2004(.xls).
 The receiver cannot open it and says it is in the wrong format.
The message she has when
she tries to open it is 'mail could not find an application to open the document'.
 I'm working on a mac and have excel for mac.

1. Go to Start button.
2. Open Control Panel.
3. Go to Windows Error Reporting.
