Troubleshoot:Diskpart problem: current read only and read only flags

Diskpart problem: current read only and read only flags

I have a problem with a USB key.
It worked fine until recently.
Now the USB key seems to be read only and I can't reformat it or anything.
In an effort to resolve the problem, I pulled up diskpart and cleared the read only flag on the disk:
attributes disk clear readonly
And it worked fine.
I then went in to clear the volume flag as well:
attributes volume clear readonly
I was promptly informed that you can't clear readonly flags on a volume for removable media (such as a USB key).
I've been looking for answers everywhere...
the diskpart clean command doesn't work (because the USB key is still read only).
I can unplug and reinsert the USB key, clean out the connector, nothing changes.
In other words, any command that would change the
state of the key fails, because it's read-only for some reason.
The root of the problem seems to be in this: when I call detail disk on the key, it shows me this (most lines have been omitted, but if you need the whole thing I can pull it up):
Current Read-Only State: YES
Read-only: NO
So why is there this discrepancy? How do I force a change in that flag so I can reformat this USB key?
